The Ultimate College Dorm Checklist (2026)

Packing for your first dorm is equal parts exciting and overwhelming. Bring too little and you’re making a midnight run to Target; bring too much and it won’t fit in a room the size of a parking space. This checklist covers what you actually need — and flags what to leave home.

Most dorm beds are Twin XL, not regular Twin — the extra five inches matters, and standard Twin sheets won’t fit. Don’t get caught out.

  • Twin XL sheet sets (bring two so you can swap)
  • Comforter or duvet
  • Mattress topper — dorm mattresses are famously thin
  • Pillows and pillowcases
  • A throw blanket for the inevitable cold lecture-hall energy

If you’re sharing a hall bathroom, portability is everything:

  • Shower caddy you can carry
  • Quick-dry towels
  • Flip-flops for the shower
  • Toiletry basics and a robe
  • Under-bed storage bins
  • Closet organizers and extra hangers
  • Over-the-door hooks
  • A few drawer organizers
  • Desk lamp with a USB port
  • Surge protector with enough outlets
  • Noise-canceling headphones
  • Notebooks, basic supplies, a small whiteboard
  • Laptop and charger (plus a backup charging cable)
  • Power strip / surge protector
  • Extension cord — dorm outlets are never where you want them
  • Pop-up hamper or laundry bag
  • Detergent pods (less mess than liquid)
  • Quarters or your campus laundry card
  • A few non-perishable snacks for late nights
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Command strips and removable hooks — you can’t put holes in the walls
  • A full toolset, a printer (campus printing usually covers it), candles (banned in most dorms), and giant furniture. Check your housing rules first.

A microwave, mini-fridge, TV, rug, and trash can — you only need one of each between you. Before anyone buys, coordinate who’s bringing what. Divvy makes that painless: claim items, vote on shared picks, and see what’s still uncovered.
