Move-in day is chaos — a packed car, a tiny room, and a line for the elevator. The students who have the smoothest day are the ones who packed the irreplaceable stuff and bought the bulky, cheap stuff after arriving. Here’s how to split your list so you’re not hauling a vacuum across three states.
Pack and bring with you
These are things you’ll want immediately, or that are annoying to replace:
- Bedding — sheets, comforter, pillows; you want to make your bed the first night
- Toiletries and a towel — you’ll need them hour one
- All your chargers and electronics — laptop, phone, cables
- A small fan — dorms are notoriously hot the first weeks
- A basic tool kit — for assembling and adjusting things
- A “first-night box” (see below)
Buy after you arrive
Bulky, heavy, or cheap-everywhere items are easier to grab locally — every college town has a Target and Walmart slammed with move-in shoppers:
- Storage bins and organizers
- Snacks, drinks, and a case of water
- Cleaning supplies and paper goods
- Extra hangers
- Décor and anything you’re unsure about until you see the actual room
Pack a “first-night box”
Set aside one box (or duffel) with everything you need the first night without unpacking the car fully: bedding, a towel, toiletries, phone charger, a change of clothes, and any meds. After a long move-in day, you’ll thank yourself.
Coordinate the shared stuff before you drive
The worst move-in surprise is you and your roommate both showing up with a mini-fridge — now one’s going home in the car it came in. Sort out who’s bringing the shared items (fridge, microwave, TV, rug) before anyone packs.
